Quick answer

Ouarzazate to Merzouga: about 350 km separate the two towns, or 5 to 6 hours of driving excluding stops via Skoura, the Dades gorges, Tinghir, the Todra gorges and Erfoud. With breaks at these stops, the full day stretches to around 8 to 9 hours.

  • Direct route: doable in half a day, but skips the Dades and Todra, two gorges that account for much of the route's appeal.
  • Road conditions: tarmacked and generally in good condition, only winding in the gorge sections.
  • Please note: Excursion Merzouga does not sell local journeys departing from Ouarzazate alone — our tours depart from Marrakech or Fès; on site, car hire, taxi or bus remain the options for reaching Merzouga directly.

On a map, Ouarzazate and Merzouga look connected by an almost straight line heading south-east.

On the road, it is 350 kilometres and about five hours of driving, punctuated by gorges, palm groves and a pass that completely changes the landscape.

This journey, also known as the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, deserves to be given time.

How long does it really take?

1. Real distance and duration of the journey

Five to six hours of driving excluding stops, for about 350 kilometres.

That is the short answer.

But driving this road without stopping means missing the essentials: the Dades gorges, the Todra gorges, the Skoura palm grove.

With these stops, the full day runs closer to eight to nine hours, making it a full stage rather than a simple transfer.

What does the road cross before the desert?

2. The stops worth making

Leaving Ouarzazate, the road first follows the Skoura palm grove, a dense and unexpected green after the mineral landscapes of the previous day.

Then come the Dades gorges, their red cliffs and hairpin bends.

Further on, the Todra gorges narrow the road between two walls over 300 metres high, before everything opens out again onto the plain.

Then the landscape changes one last time.

The mountains recede.

The vegetation thins out.

Erfoud marks the last town before the desert, and it is shortly after that the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon, that orange line visible from afar well before you reach it.

Should you do the journey direct or split it in two?

The direct journey is possible in half a day.

For a traveller in a hurry, that is a defensible choice.

But driving five hours straight in heat that climbs fast in the afternoon is far from pleasant, and it means missing the Todra gorges, one of the most striking stretches in all of southern Morocco.

If your schedule allows, a lunch break in Tinghir or a night in Boumalne Dadès breaks the pace and makes the arrival in Merzouga more relaxed.

What are the road conditions and what precautions should you take?

The road is tarmacked throughout, including in the most winding sections of the gorges.

It is not a dirt track.

It remains narrow in places and frequented by slow trucks, which limits overtaking.

An early morning departure avoids the afternoon heat and the densest traffic.

To check general road conditions and official recommendations before travelling in the south of the country, the Moroccan National Tourist Office website remains a reliable reference.

Own car, taxi or organised tour?

With a hire car, this journey presents no particular difficulty.

Excursion Merzouga does not offer a bookable journey departing from Ouarzazate alone: our tours depart from Marrakech or Fès and pass through Ouarzazate en route. For a complete Marrakech-Merzouga tour including this stretch, expect from 80 € per adult on the shared option, or on request for a private vehicle — see the details on our how much does a Merzouga excursion cost page.

If you are already in Ouarzazate and simply want to reach Merzouga without returning to Marrakech, the options remain car hire, a grand-tourisme taxi booked on site, or the bus (CTM, Supratours) to Erfoud or Rissani followed by a local taxi for the last few kilometres.

If Ouarzazate is just a stop on a wider tour from Marrakech, our 4-day Marrakech-Merzouga tour guide details how to fit this southern stretch into a complete itinerary, and our page on the Moroccan desert places this journey in the broader context of the country's Saharan routes.

Practical tip

Bring water and snacks for the road: petrol stations are few and far between the gorges and Erfoud.

A full tank in Ouarzazate avoids any unpleasant surprise before arriving in Merzouga.
