How to Get to Merzouga from Marrakech?

Merzouga is about 560 km south-east of Marrakech, via the Tichka pass, Ouarzazate and the Dadès valley — 8 to 9 hours of driving, usually split over 2 days. Here is a full comparison of the transport options available.

The Most Convenient

1. Organised 2-3 Day Tour (Minibus or Private)

A driver picks you up directly from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. The journey is split over 2 days with stops in Ouarzazate/Aït Ben Haddou and the Dadès valley, so you arrive in Merzouga rested.

  • Door-to-door pick-up
  • Cultural stops included (kasbahs, gorges)
  • Local guide and desert camp included on arrival

2. Rental Car (Self-Drive)

Route via the Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, the Dadès valley and the Todra gorges (about 8-9h of driving, to be split over 2 days with an overnight stop).

  • Complete freedom over route and stops
  • Demanding mountain driving (Tichka pass, hairpin bends)
  • Requires an overnight stop on the way

3. CTM / Supratours Bus (via Rissani or Erfoud)

There is no direct bus to Merzouga itself. CTM and Supratours run to Rissani or Erfoud from Marrakech, with a local taxi connection for the last few kilometres.

  • Very affordable option
  • Long (10h+) and tiring journey
  • Vehicle change needed on arrival

4. Flight to Ouarzazate or Errachidia + Transfer

Domestic flights connect Marrakech to Ouarzazate or Errachidia. A private road transfer (2 to 4h depending on the airport) then completes the journey to Merzouga.

  • Saves time on the road section
  • Infrequent flights, book ahead
