Merzouga has neither a train station nor an airport.
For a village so well known, that is almost surprising.
But that is precisely what shapes the journey: you do not land in Merzouga, you arrive by road, after crossing mountains, gorges or palm groves depending on your departure city.
This guide compares the concrete ways of getting there, without favouring any option by default: organised tour, private minivan, hire car or bus, each has its real constraints.
What is the best way to reach Merzouga?
From Marrakech, Fès, Casablanca or Ouarzazate, there are four options: an organised tour by shared minibus or minivan, private transport with a driver, car hire for a self-drive trip, or the bus + local taxi combo.
For full details of these options from Marrakech — Supratours bus price, hire car rates, advantages of a private driver — see our detailed bus, car and driver comparison from Marrakech.
For other departure cities, see our guides to Fès to Merzouga and Casablanca to Merzouga.
Can you fly to Merzouga?
No. The nearest airport is Errachidia, about 1 hour 30 by road, served by a few domestic flights from Casablanca.
Ouarzazate airport also exists, but it is nearly 5 hours' drive from Merzouga.
For travellers landing directly in Casablanca, our guide to the Merzouga excursion from Casablanca details the realistic options for the rest of the journey.
In practice, the vast majority of international travellers land at Marrakech-Menara, the main hub, before continuing by road.
It is also the easiest departure point for organising the rest of the trip.
How long is the drive depending on the departure city?
From Marrakech, allow 8 to 9 hours' drive non-stop (560 km), or 2 to 3 days if the journey is broken into stages, which remains the most comfortable option — see our detailed bus, car and driver comparison from Marrakech.
From Fès, via Ifrane and Midelt, it takes about 7 to 8 hours.
From Casablanca, allow 9 to 10 hours, the Moroccan city furthest from Merzouga by road.
From Ouarzazate, on the other hand, Merzouga is only 4 to 5 hours away via the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs — the shortest journey of all, often underestimated by travellers who plan their tour solely from Marrakech.
Practical tip
Whatever option you choose, time the first or last hour of driving for the end of the day: the entries and exits to Merzouga at sunset, with the dunes in the background, are well worth the wait.
