Three days is generally the reasonable minimum for a Marrakech-Merzouga tour.
It is short enough to fit most travel schedules, and long enough for a real night in the dunes, not just a quick there-and-back.
Here is how this format actually unfolds, day by day.
Day 1: Marrakech, the High Atlas and Ait Ben Haddou
Departure is early, generally around 7am, directly from your hotel in Marrakech.
The road climbs quickly into the High Atlas, up to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, before descending towards the pre-Saharan valleys.
First major stop: the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The night is spent in Ouarzazate or the Dades valley depending on the tour arrangements, with a traditional dinner included.
Day 2: Todra Gorges and arrival at the dunes
The second day crosses the Todra Gorges, whose limestone cliffs exceed 300 metres in height, then the Tinghir palm grove and the town of Erfoud.
The landscape changes gradually: less vegetation, more reg, until the sand finally appears on the horizon.
Arrival in Merzouga is generally in the late afternoon, just in time for the camel ride to the desert camp, before sunset on Erg Chebbi.
A Berber dinner and music around the fire follow at the camp.
Day 3: sunrise and return
The wake-up is before dawn to watch the sunrise from the sand ridges, a moment many travellers find more striking than the sunset the evening before.
After breakfast at the camp, the return to Marrakech goes via the Rissani market and the Dades Gorges.
Arrival in Marrakech is in the evening, generally around 8pm.
How much does a 3-day tour to Merzouga cost and what does it include?
The shared group option, in an air-conditioned minibus, starts at 80 € per adult and 75 € per child, with transport, accommodation, dinners, breakfasts and the camel ride included.
The private VIP minivan option is quoted on request, with a personalised pace.
If your priority is limiting time on the road each day, our 4-day tour adds a day of breathing room, without significantly changing the per-day price.
Should you choose a 3-day or 4-day tour?
The 3-day format remains the most booked, especially by travellers with limited time in Marrakech or combining the desert with other stops in the country.
It works well for a first trip to the Sahara, as long as you accept that two of the three days are spent largely on the road.
For a couple or group who prefer to take their time, adding a day mainly changes the pace: fewer kilometres to swallow each day, more time at photo stops, an extra stop in the gorges.
The desert itself remains identical in both options.
Practical tip
On a 3-day format, the road takes up a large part of the time.
If you dislike long days in a vehicle, plan 4 days instead to breathe between stops.
Bring a warm jacket: camp nights remain cool even after a day at 30°C.
