Should you drive yourself or take a driver?
Driving yourself from Marrakech to Merzouga is entirely possible: the 560 km road is fully tarmacked throughout, with no need for a 4x4.
The real question is not technical but human: managing several hours of demanding mountain driving, while missing most of the landscapes you came to see since the driver must keep their eyes on the road rather than on the Tizi n'Tichka pass or the gorges.
That is why the majority of travellers ultimately opt for a local driver-guide rather than the wheel — an option detailed on our 3-day tour.
Do you need a 4x4, and what makes the road demanding?
No need for a 4x4 on this journey: a standard hire saloon or city car is enough, as the road is tarmacked from Marrakech all the way to Merzouga. A 4x4 only becomes useful for driving on the desert tracks themselves, once you arrive.
The most demanding stretch remains the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 m: hairpin bends for several kilometres, sometimes tricky lorry overtaking on a two-lane road, and possible snow or fog in winter above 2,000 m.
Night driving on this route should be avoided: street lighting is scarce outside towns, and animals or pedestrians can appear without enough visibility on mountain roads.
Real fuel budget
- • Round-trip distance: 1,120 km (560 km each way).
- • Estimated fuel: 70 to 90 litres depending on the vehicle.
- • 2026 fuel cost: around 900 to 1,200 MAD (90-120 €), excluding hire cost.
- • Insurance: check carefully — mountain roads are not always covered by basic packages.
Should you split the journey over several days rather than doing it in one go?
Splitting the journey over 2 to 3 days, with an overnight stop (generally in the Dades valley or Ouarzazate), remains the best option — whether in your own car or on an organised tour.
A one-day round trip exposes you to fatigue and often pushes you to drive at night on the mountain stretches, which significantly increases the risk.
For details of the possible stops on this route — Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, Todra and Dades Gorges — see our guide to the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs.
For those who prefer not to drive themselves, our tours with a multilingual driver-guide cover the same itinerary: 3-day tour from 80 € per adult, or private VIP excursion in a dedicated minivan.
