The word "luxury" can be daunting or exciting, depending on how you take it.
Here, we are not talking about a five-star hotel dropped in the desert.
The route stays the same, the dunes are the same.
What changes is what happens in between: the vehicle, the stops, and above all the night in the dunes.
What does the private minivan actually change?
A luxury tour follows the same itinerary as a classic tour to Erg Chebbi: the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas, a stop at the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then a stop along the kasbah route.
Nobody reinvents the route for the luxury option.
What changes is the comfort around it.
A minivan reserved for your group alone, with a multilingual driver-guide who doesn't have eight other stops to negotiate for other travellers.
He can extend a photo stop, or push on if the group prefers to arrive early at the camp.
It is not spectacular.
It is simply fewer constraints.
What are the kasbah stops before the desert worth?
On the road between Ouarzazate and Merzouga, the difference shows when it comes to choosing where to sleep.
The kasbah hotels selected for the luxury option generally have a swimming pool, a view over the Valley of Roses or the Dades gorges, and better soundproofed rooms than the standard accommodation on the same route.
After a day on the road, you can feel the difference.
The desert camp: where does the real difference lie?
The camel ride to the camp is identical, whatever the option.
An hour and a half on camelback, the sunset gradually changing the colour of the dunes, then arrival at the camp as night falls.
The difference comes afterwards.
On the luxury option, the tents have private bathrooms, sometimes air conditioning, and the dinner under the Berber tent is more refined.
On the standard option, the bathrooms are often shared between several tents, which doesn't bother everyone but can weigh on some travellers, especially families.
The sky, for its part, does not change depending on what you paid.
What is included in both options?
Sunset camel ride, dinner under the tent, stargazing with a guide: this core programme does not change between the standard and luxury options.
Some dates add a visit to the village of Khamlia, known for its gnawa music, or an optional sunrise before the return.
What does it cost, and who is it right for?
Our luxury option starts at 180 € per adult and 170 € per child, compared to 110 €/100 € on comfort and 80 €/75 € on standard.
The price gap does not buy you a different desert.
It buys a more comfortable night and a little more flexibility on the road.
Desert camps in this category fill up fast between October and May; it is best to book several weeks in advance.
For a couple who wants privacy at the camp, or a family who prefers not to share bathrooms, the luxury option is easily justified.
For a traveller who comes mainly for the camel ride and a night under the stars, the comfort option is more than enough.
To compare the different categories of desert camps in the dunes, our guide to luxury camps in Merzouga details the differences.
The full programme of the private option, with dedicated vehicle and driver, is detailed on our private VIP Merzouga tour page.
Practical tip
Even on the luxury option, bring a warm layer: desert nights remain cool, however comfortable the tent.
Also pack a cotton cheche against sandstorms and a power bank if you plan to photograph the sky after dinner.
